I considered trying the washer pump actually. Hahah I've seen it done before. So the actual pump itself from the e36 will swap in to the e30 assembly? That widens my search if so.

Yeah you have to take it completely out of the e36 carrier but when you get to the pump itself they are damn near identical except the e36 pump has a ridge midway in its case where it rides in the e36 carrier.....which makes no difference when you put it in an e30.

...or you could test it like we suggested for free and not put an unneeded pump in your car, just saying...

this is the perfect reason to justify buying a new tool as well.

Started fine yesterday and this morning, drove it for about an hour, now this:

It won't idle without throttle and won't rev much. It did this once and then fucked off suddenly and ran great. Drove for 5 mins and went back to this.

Got a fuel pressure guage. Has 3.5 bar of pressure at cranking as it should and it holds about 300kpa (about 3 bar) of pressure after a few minutes.

                Has lots of spark.

Could it be possible for the crank sensor, if not secured properly, be firing the injectors or coils at the wrong time? Is it possible to put the crank sensor in the rear hole like on the OBD2 setup? Are the tone wheels compatible at all?

Possible, the crank wheels are both 60-2, the M44 Sensor (dont quote me on that) will PnP into OBD2 hole for OBD1

That's what my research has indicated as well. Hoveringguy proved that one with his OBD1 m54.

But unfortunately there is not an m44 crank sensor for sale in this whole town. Gah.

I'm picking up a used sensor off a friend for lack of a new one available right meow, going to give it a whirl.

I mangled the mounting bracket on my timing case trying to remove a broken off mounting/hold down screw/bolt. I'm thinking the crank sensor was moving around or not in the right spot. I mean, I've got fuel, I've got spark, the only other thing it needs are compression and timing, and compression problems aren't going to be intermittent.

                        Observations:

I should have waited, made an OBD2 harness and sent my DME away months ago

I also could have just torn this engine completely down and bought a used turbo setup

I didn't do any of the above

                        I'm an idiot.

I'm going to try the m44 block mounted sensor, then cut my losses and put the OBD2 parts back on if that doesn't work. The ironic thing is that I kept the OBD1 setup because I already had it on a running motor.

So I got my m44 crank sensor. It totally does work, so now we know that. Car started after a bit of extended cranking. Now here's the fucked up part. If I try to give it throttle, it misfires and backfires into the intake and runs like shit. It will idle but pretty rough. Oh yeah the cat also got glowing red hot and the car started shooting melting/glowing bits of the cat converter out of the muffler... I don't know if it's from how it's running right now, or possibly from a bunch of unburned fuel lying around in the exhaust.

I didn't read the whole thread, but have you tested the injectors? Fuel may be good at the rail, but maybe the injectors aren't working as they should?

Have you pulled any CEL codes?
do you have the CEL wired up?

The check engine function of the DME will tell you something if its all wired up; it could be a sensor with long wire lead has broken insulation inside (happens to 24v cam position sensors and some others)
