    Found an m50

Ok, well as the thread title states i found an m50 for $500CDN. Its got 130k miles on it, and ran when the owner took it out of the car (92 325is). Now he said it burns about a liter of oil every 1300 miles.

I was thinking about a rebuild and got a quote from a near by shop for $4500....so i leaughed...and then cryed...but seriously...what i want to know is if there are any rebuild kits out there that can stop the oil consumption without killing my budget.

oh btw the engine comes with an ecu and a dinan chip attached to it.

You're better off finding another engine. I don't know the value of engines in Canada, but the M50 in the US is seriously a dime a dozen.

If you want to re-ring the bottom end, that's going to run you around $150 in rings, $120 or so in bottom end bearings, new headgasket $60, new oil pan gasket $20, new rod stretch bolts (a MUST replace) $60, new valve cover gasket $20. You're going to also have to pull the head to re-ring the engine, so you'll need a few specialized tools to do this as well. And new head stretch bolts.

So, all in all, it's going to run at least $450 in parts alone. You're seriously better off looking for another engine. Or if you pick this one up, just plan on using the ancillaries like power steering pump, alternator, and the intake bits.

      thanx for the quick response.
See the thing is..i've been looking for this engine for a while now up here and so far i've found 3...this one, another one with 80k on it but that one would run me $1300 and the third one which a junker wanted $1700 for and it had a little over 140k.

so buying all these gasket kits might be a plausable...if not the best option.
i also concidered getting an engine from the states, but shipping would absolutely rape me as would the duties at the border.

Crap that's expensive, even with the exchange rate.

The regasketing etc. is not too too bad in terms of expense, but then you'll need to consider, how good is the head? At least it's a nonvanos, and you could get another head from the states for a reasonable price.

$1300 isn't too bad if it comes with EVERYTHING. Like harness, ECU, PS pump, alternator, intake manifold, etc. It would also allow you to get your project done sooner than later.

Well, by the end of the month i'll have to decide for sure...today i'm getting the car in the paint shop and i dont want it sitting around collecting dust for too long...would be a waste.

The owner did say that there were no leaks coming from the motor...so apparently it only burned oil...i dont know if this is a bad thing or a good thing...

another thing is that the 1300 dollar motor is from a tuner shop that has a good reputation around here with bmw, porsche and vw...so i am leaning towards their motor now.
