    Project Orca CD coverage

Does the Project Orca CD cover all different options in the M/S50 swap?

Specifically, using a Getrag 260 tranny with the S50.

Everyone's got their own way of doing the swap, and I'm just wondering if they dictate what parts to use.

Ive heard it was complete crap. With all the info on the net, you might as well not even use it.

Anything and everything you need to know is here, but 50% of the shit that is said is wrong though lol

What do you need to know? I've done two swaps using the getrag 260.

Have you ever done one with the single mass flywheel? I want to reuse my shaved / lightened flywheel, but I don't know if there will be any issues with that...it seems most people have the dual mass.

If I can use that flywheel, I assume only a clutch meant specifically for the 325e will work, right?

Also, people have said sometimes they have to shave the M20 flywheel to work, but I don't know if that's only for the dual mass or single mass. Mine's already shaved, but I don't know which side the weight was shaved from.

Clutch slave cylinder, any issues with that?

Sorry for all of the questions, I've done a ton of prep to the car and I'm getting close to buying the rest of the parts and throwing it all together. But I'm debating on just paying someone to do it.

Sorry but really quick question. Shops will do these swaps for someone? What kind of shops do this type of work?

I'm using my original e30 single mass flywheel, which I had lightened and resurfaced. I'm thinking that you might have single/dual mass confused. All 325i's came with the single mass flywheels AFAIK.

If I can use that flywheel, I assume only a clutch meant specifically for the 325e will work, right?

Right. The clutch kit is specific to the single or dual mass flywheels.

I don't think any material can be removed on the friction side... The clearance issue is between the flywheel and the oilpan- if your lightened flywheel doesn't clear when you bolt it up, you can remove material from the oilpan casting pretty easily.

Clutch slave cylinder, any issues with that?

Nope. Just use your original slave cylinder.

Make sure you remember to swap your starter over to the new engine.

              Places that do it frequently:
              Terry Sayther, www.terrysaytherauto.com/Home.htm
              AKG Motorsport, www.akgmotorsport.com

I called a place here in St. Louis called Bimmers 'R Us, and they said "they've never done it, but they can do it, they have the CD." ...which makes me nervous. That means I won't be taking it to them.

Thanks for all of that info, Brew, it's a big help. I'm going to pull the tranny off of my M20 in the next couple of days and double check what flywheel I have. When I got the lightened one from Metric Mechanic 5 years ago, all I remember is that it used to weigh 24 lbs, and now it weighs 12. I guess I'll find out what it is when I tear it apart.

                Thanks again!

Looks to me like a single mass, but I think its thicker than the OEM single mass. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

A dual mass flywheel is just that- it is a two-piece design bonded together. You should be able to see a "seam" between the two pieces.

EDIT- Just remembered that you mentioned it was lightened. Is it an aluminum lightweight flywheel? If so, its probably a replacement for a dual-mass one, meaning you'll need a clutch kit for a dual-mass flywheel.

It's a stock flywheel that was shaved. All I know is that 5/86 was when they switched from one to the other, and my car has a 2/86 build date. It has that stupid reference pin on the flywheel that is necessary for the car to start...
