      The front of the valve cover will show it. One lump=single, straight across= dual

        That's a dual. The dead giveaway from this view is the modern idle-air control circuit. See the odd 6-fingered air-injection system running across the top of the intake runners? That was part of the technical update, not just the dual-vanos.

            There should be an engine code on the drivers side block at the bottom where it meets the oil pan. Should say something like "30 6S 2" or "25 6S 2" or something similar. The E39s were made from 97-2003. From 97 to 2000 they made the 528, 540. From 2001 to 2003 they made the 525 and 530. The M5 from 98-2003 but that engine does not look like a V8.
