Funny, I spent time on the two Hardinge HLV-H lathes we have at work before moving to CNC. All I can say is I adore them, they are tremendous machines. But you obviously know that.

A good friend of mine purchased a 1948 Monarch 10EE earlier this year for his personal workshop. People often compare them with the HLV-H. His needs some TLC and I haven't personally run it, but it appears as though it could go toe to toe with the Hardinge.
Honestly there is no comparison, and this is coming from a Hardinge cheerleader. The 10EE is a superior machine, even in its original configuration (Trav a dial and vacuum lines).

I worked closely with a NASA machine shop and had an oportunity to run a 10EE fresh off our Hardinge (which is an early 90's model) and to my shear disbelief it was a better machine.

One thing Hardinge does better than anyone is single pointing. I can run a set of 14Mx1.5 4" threaded shafts in around a minute a piece. (Ive been called on this, trust me its the machine not me!)

      Awesome work!

What do you use for a throttle cable? Can you custom make a throttle cable?

Ive got a cheap universal one from Summit, I already dont like how it feels so Im going to pull a long one from an e38 or something and shorten it if need be.

Lots of ball endmill work but it would really show off your design and programming skills. The good money is made in real 3D modeling and programming, something you should look into.

Couple ways you could do it. Clamp first side down, mill second side. Clamp second side down, remove first side clamp, mill first side. Or - drill holes first, clamp plate down through holes, preferably using large "washer" so the plate won't chatter, and mill entire OD in one shot. You'll need to make a fixture for either method.

I do a full 3d contour on all of my plenum bases and then blend it in by hand. The trumpets would deff be more eye candy than function. I know a lot of guys like to incorporate them into plenum designs, but I have do it both ways with heads up dyno testing and found the advantage to be negligible if any.

Here is one I do with more of a modular design approach incorporating more 3d contouring.

I fixture everything, while trying to universalize as many bolt patterns as possible. That way I an re purpose fixtures, they are time consuming to make but can pay off really quick in bigger runs.
