    e30 s50 vs e36 m3

ALright so i put in a 2.97 diff from my 325e parts car and i am finally able to drive over 80 mph without redlining so my friend and i did a couple of pulls from 2nd and 3rd gear ,unfortunately we stayed side by side everytime. Also i am running a e36 325 transmission and have a cone filter with no heatshield under the hood. He has a BMP CAI kit lightweight flywheel and chip i think he ran a 13.7 at the track. My question is if i do a 3.15 or say a 3.23 will i take him or do i purely need to get more power out of my engine.

    - I think he dynoed same numbers my engine did but my car is atleast 500 pounds lighter......i do feel a good amount of parasitic drag from old wheel bearings and diff not being very great.

Fuck man, somethin aint right. Its a no contest with mine (i have a toasted 3.25ls) and I can outrun most drivers of E46 M3s through the first few cogs.
    Im now E30less.

Never had a problem with the E36 M3's. From driving mine and my brothers 3.2 E30, it's what you might call the 'slaughterhouse effect.' Bang every gear just right and you'll be door to door with an E46 M3, up to about a hundred and forty. Braking, on the other hand ...... :D

        Something is DEFINITELY up. I've run nose-to-nose with and e36 M3 (EURO 286hp!!), and I still have a N/A m20 :D
This is your M20 on steroids:

Well remember i am using a 2.97 diff with a zf non- M tranny yeah and on top of that my rpms are still not reading right cause i havent got the coding plug, so i am shifting into my economy gauge but still feels like it wants to pull ,i must be shifting to early too. Oh well im definetely gonna figure this out.

Again will i pull away with a better geared diff ????????

No shit?? An s50 conversion will keep up with an e46 m3!? I got my motor in this weekend so it shouldn't be too long before I'm driving this thing...

Yeah. You really have to be on it though. If they have SMG its tough because they dont miss shifts.

You lose out in the top end, probably coupled to the lower power and shitty aerodynamics. The slight power/weight advantage doesnt do you much good in the triple digits.

If he has a lightweight flywheel and you don't, that could explain some of it. There are a lot of different variables, but the diff ratio is definitely part of it.

HAHAHAHAHAHA i knew it. I finally made a custom heatshield for my intake and this time i put a whole half a car length on him, meaning his front bumper was half a car away from my rear bumper 2nd gear roll to middle of 4th. I have a huge smile on my face. Cant wait to get a 3.15 or 3.25

Nice to hear that made an improvement, but you should be seeing both of his headlights in the side mirror by the top of 2nd. something is wrong

Yeah but we started the race at the end of 2nd as in 2nd gear at 45mph and then to like 90mph just shifting in to 4th probably, i was too overwhelmed by the sound of my car.

Just for comparisons i ran his car against an e39 m5 and it only put 2 car lengths on him from a 2nd gear roll till the end of 4th.

My car is not running 100% anyway because:

I am running pink top injectors which i believe are 21.5lbs without proper tuning. The car does smell rich.

I a have an 02 sensor light on but no check engine light.

Im not running a muffler so maybe i dont have enough back pressure.

My normal driving temp is between 1/4 and 1/2 maybe thats too cool.

the regular e36 transmission was my trans of choice... a 3.25 LSD will be the best option.

the m3 tranny has a wider spacing on the first gears and overdrive is over rated...

I raced a WS6 Firebird in my m50 e30, it had a 3.73 LSD I think fifth gear topped 110 or so with that setup... anyway, I killed his ass!

The E36 Getrag is fine as long as it has a 2.5, anything more and they like to shuck gears.
Nice run with the WS6, you know those run 13's in the quarter mile. Tough to believe a short stroke 2.5 could beat one in a drag race though

And yes, i've been in an SMG e46 M3 that couldn't shake some McHenry magic until the flying brick thing started happenin
