    e30 vs e36 clutch on m50

    I'm am working on swapping an m50 into my 86 ETA. I will be using the ETA transmission. The last piece of my puzzle is a clutch and flywheel. I know about using the 323i throw out bearing when using the E transmission but searching around it seems most are using the m20 setup. Any reason not to use an e36 flywheel and clutch? Seems to be more options out there?

    Mainly because its cheaper/easier to run a single mass flywheel with m20 setup.

      Either will work fine. The M20 clutch has issues with the S50/52.

        Nrubenstein is correct. You need to shave the engine side of the m20 flywheel down to the ring gear (or close to it) or you'll have clearance issues. The s50/52 with an m20 flywheel will need a beefier clutch setup as the stock m20 clutch will probably not last too long. I'd do the e36 clutch/flywheel (and ZF if possible) as the late model e36 starter is threaded too (making things a bit easier should you need to remove it later on).

          Unfortunately i don't have the zf trans. Someday I'd like to go to a 6 speed though.

          M50 is stock for now but will most likely see cams and a turbo in a year or 2 when it finally gets retired from daily status. I do have the e36 starter but its from an automatic car, will it still work with the e36 5speed flywheel?
