What should I look for when buying an s50?

I was looking on craigslist and there is a guy parting out a 95 m3. He says that his transmission blew so he's parting out the car. The engine has 198k on it, so what should I look for to see if its worth it or not? The engine is already pulled so I cant do a compression check and hes already sold the engine harness. Should I stay away or what?

You can still do a leak down test with the engine out of the car. I'd start there.

I bought a S50 with roughly the same mileage. Didn't get to see the motor run, and all the PO said was that there was some ticking in the head. Turned out that I needed a new crank and block and whole bunch of other shit.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd at least want to see and hear the motor run.
