Early Model w/ M52 Cluster Question

I've been doing a lot of reading and trying to research the cluster info for my swap. I've been getting a lot of conflicting information or confusing information on clusters. I wondered if anyone who knows a lot about these could assist, so I get the correct cluster.

My car is an 85 325 (production dated 12/84). I am swapping in a M52B28.

My plan is to us any later model cluster from a 6 cylinder with a 7k tach.

The question is, will it be a plug and play (ie the harnesses are all the same on the back) with the M52 as long as its a 6 cylinder cluster?

Could I use a late model 318 cluster with a 6 cylinder coding plug?

Any suggestions on the best way to go about getting a useful cluster? (since I have a shitty e cluster)

    Thanks,

    Zeke

late model cluster plugs and plays fine except for the gas gauge, you'll have to take out the gas gauge from your early model cluster and put it in the late model cluster.

i'm not sure about the 318 w/ 6 cyl plug.

I should have sent it to you with the engine...

are you talking about the e36 cluster?

awesome that's what I was wanting to confirm. So I can basically get any 6 cylinder cluster with a 7k tach and swap my fuel gauge and be good to go. If I wanted to keep the odometer numbers the same could I just swap the speedo or is the odometer able to be transfered fairly easily? I'd like to keep the chassis mileage correct.

yes, you can swap the speedometers.

Don't swap the speedometers. Just roll it to the correct mileage and replace the gears. Like glnr13 said. Refresh the odo gears.

late model cars have 2 fuel senders so it's twice the amt of resistance to the gauge. The gauge should work but will probably read half tank when it's actually empty. Not to high jack but my car is an 84 eta will a late model I cluster plug and play with my m50 swap?

I have an 84 eta and the late model 7K cluster works fine in my car. My gas gauge reads correctly also.

this is exactly what happened after my cluster swap. i ran out of gas and thought i had half of a tank left.

When I swapped my early tank for the bigger late tank and wired all the senders up according to the schematics, my gauge did the same thing. I cut the wires going to the other sender and it worked fine ever since. so now that im going to be putting in a late cluster ill probably have to wire it back up. Or find an early I cluster? anyone know what year they changed this? once again sorry for highjacking
