    Difinitive M20 single mass on any 24-valve swap solution w/ photos

    so, by now you've hear a lot of things about putting either of the two styles of M20 single mass flywheels on a 24-valve engine.

    the thing is, if you just bolt it in you'll end up with something like this:

    and that won't work at all.

    so, your options are;
    1.) machine down flywheel
    2.) get two shorter pan bolts and shave down the mount steps

    I chose #2 because it takes 5 minutes and was free.

    perfect clearance. sawzall and a 4.5" cutoff wheel. did this with the engine in the car, no problem.

    hope this helps.

    good info. I'm going to keep the singlemass from my early b27 and mate the getrag to my 24v. I didn't realize this would be an issue. I was planning to have a machine shop balance the flywheel, so maybe I will have them trim it down too. I'm surprised I haven't read anything about the single mass wheel causing this.

      It's been covered dozens of time. You could also get a 323i flywheel that is already lightened and doesn't have the step on the back.

        This post was made because of a fb post which is ironic. Two people not researching. Covered in dozens and dozens of threads.

          Thanks r the pics,I was planning to have the flywheel shaved if I ever get the motivation to swap my m50 in but now that I see the mod done to the pan I think I will go that rout to save some monies.

            Good title, good pics, simple explanation.

            Yes, it's been covered 1000X, but this needs a sticky in the 24V section.

            Closing SOON!

                starter got about half a turn then locked solid. knew something was wrong!

                for the record you can also run any old release bearing with a G250/ZF with this setup as well. the Euro 323 bearing is taller so you get bite closer to you on the pedal, but the 260 and 250 bearings will work fine.
