    Some questions on my S52 project

    I'm in the process of putting an S52 with ZF trans in my 86 sedan. So far I've done the following:

    - replaced valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, pilot bearing, rear main seal, clutch, throwout bearing, thermostat housing, water pump, and main belt

    - put the motor and trans in the car and bolted up the engine and trans mounts

    - mocked up radiator and hoses

    This is my first motor swap and while I've done a lot of reading, I could use some help alone the way. I'm going to use this thread to ask questions and hopefully get some help! Here it goes....

    Keep in mind my motor is obd2 that has been converted to obd1 or so I was told.

    I thought there was only going to be one harness connector but it looks like they are two. Can you tell me what the difference between these is? Do I keep both?



    Also, what are the three white box connector things in the prior picture. It looks like they are supposed to plug in somewhere but I don't see anything on my motor or the e30 chassis harness where they can go.

    The e30 radiator had two temp sensors whereas the m42 radiator I'm using only has one plug. Do I delete one?

    I see OBD 1 throttle body and intake manifold. But all the wiring looks OBD 2 to me.
    Don't freak out tho! OBD2 really isn't all that bad to wire, and the DME is MUCH smarter then the OBD 1 one.

      The white things hold relays, and it looks like you don't have them in there.

        I was told that it had been converted to obd1 and the dme has a turner chip with an obd1 tune.

            Here is my theory: the guy I bought the motor from was running it in an obd2 car so the motor side of the harness is obd1 while some of the connectors remain obd2.

            Regardless, would it be a lot easier for me to source an e36 obd1 harness or should I just figure out what connectors I don't need and delete them.

              One of the connectors is for abs on the car it came off of. I assume I'll have to delete the abs plug because our cars have mechanical abs systems but not sure.

                      The one on the same lead as the O2 sensor is your trans reverse light switch. The other could be Evap valve if it's not plugged in yet.

                      If you search you can probably find someone who's laid out the harness and labelled every connector.

                      Always label your shit man

                        Thanks for the tip. I've searched far and wide and have come up with a couple diagrams that are labeled, the problem is they don't have up close pictures of each connector and and some of the connectors look similar.

                        I agree with the labeling. Problem is I bought this motor and harness and it came without labels.

                          Ran into a problem. The back of the block has two ports; one for the e36 temp sensor and one that had a line running from it to the throttle body. I pulled the plug that was running to the TB and was going to put the brown top temp sensor in it but the sensor won't fit in the hole. Not the threads which I know would need to be re threaded, but the actual sensor portion.

                          Any ideas on what to do here? My only option seems to be to enlarge the hole in the block but I really don't want to mess with that. Another idea is to attach the sensor to the existing plug (on left below) via a piece of hose like the second pic below.

                          Thoughts?

                              I am almost positive the round connector is for the MAF sensor.
