Add a second muffler and get the longest one you can fit in the back?

right now i have single mandrel 2.5" , 22" long resonator and 5x11x22 muffler (all magnaflow) it still is too loud, especially annoying around 2-3krpm range, after 3k note really improves for a nice performance one. but i hit the 2-3k range driving on street all the time so it is relevantComment

I finally drove my swap car a fairly long distance, and at idle the car is pretty quiet. But if you open it up, it is positively guttural. Not good for a DD, but plenty fine for impressing the ladies.
Um OK so I lied again. The ladies don't dig the E30.
Oh yeah, 5th gear acceleration FTW.Comment

My loud exhaust has been quieted by a chambered resonator and an "Xelerator" chambered muffler. Nice and quiet but the performance loss is stunning.
Another thing about a louder exhaust - it sure makes matching revs when down shifting a lot easier and more fun to do.
Last night I ran against a very clean e36 M3 on the interstate. We were dead even. I want my performance back.Comment

^^ hmm, i like my s50 performance, but hate the noise
so i recently put one of those magnaflow metallic core spun cats and unfortunatelly the diff in noise is almost unnoticable
basically, i have an option of swapping my round 22x4" res for a 18x4x9 muffler but i am unconvinced it will make it quiet either (will probably quiet it down a little but not worth the $200 for muffler and labour). My res is flanged, so maybe i can experiment with some baffled types to cut down on noise substantially and if i don't like it - swap it out.
The main annoying note is higher pitched buzzing/whine (like a chainsaw) i wish there would be a resonator designed to eliminate these kinds of frequencies.
here is a video: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?doc...09603&hl=en-CA
(but you cannot really hear the high pitched noises for some reason)Last edited by static; 06-17-2007, 03:29 PM.Comment

the only spot that is modified, i image, are the downpipes right before the cats.Comment

My exhaust system is Ebay headers, a VSR center section, and a Stromung cat-back. I am hoping to adapt the header collectors to the mating plate at the front of the VSR pipe. It's all just "off the rack" E30M3 parts.
What about O2 sensor location? I'm not really worried about installing it in such a manner as to allow sampling of all 6 cylinders. Rather I need to learn more about its proximity to the cylinder head and the effect of EGT on the sensor and accuracy. Is this even a concern at all? Should I just weld a bung on the a collector and call it a day?

bumping this up because its exhasut time.
im using ebay headers. they fit ok but i think im going to have to add a couple spacers to lift up the header. its like 1mm away from the subframe, unless i dent the header.
I read the thread and im liking the X pipe, and e36 m3 muffler. on the ebay headers they came with clamp connectors and one side is 2" and the other is 1.75", do i need an adaptor to attach it to the X Pipe?
anyone have any input for my needs? i dont want it to loud although anything will be better then it is now.Last edited by BDSax; 09-28-2007, 09:38 PM.Comment

just whatever you do, don't go straight through. No matter how big mufflers you put on it, it's still loud and droney
Best bet is to probably modify and retain the stock configuration with stock cats/resonators, and maybe some nice catback like stromung.
Something like this is best
