Which ecu's will work?

I have a 92 non-vanos m50 with a blue label ecu that is smoked. Can I use any m50 ecu from 91 to 92 like a 91 525i auto? There are a couple auctions on ebay that say I can replace my ecu with any ecu up to 94 including ecu's that were fitted with vanos can that right?

just get a pre 94 ecu with the numbers 413 on it.
