Question regarding chain tensioner

I'm finishing up the assembly of an M52 and completed all of the valvetrain/vanos work today. I noticed, however, that the primary chain tensioner I have (which is from an M50) does not seem to be compatible with the guide rail from the M52 block. I looked up the chain tensioner components on realoem and it appears that the M52's use a different type of piston end on the tensioner that does not have a 'notch' like the M50. On the M50's the guide rail fits into the notch on the tensioner, but on my M52 block the rail is too wide for it. The M52 piston just has a flat smooth end on it, instead. My question is can I still use the M50 tensioner piston, or is it going to put too much tension on the rail since the elevated piston edges will be pushing the rail in farther? I'll attach pics of the 2 different pistons. Thanks-

I would use the proper tensioner if I was you. It might work, or it might fuck up a lot of very expensive bits. I'd play it safe.

I thought I read somewhere around here that the M52 tensioner sucks and that the S52 tensioner is superior. Which is odd because I would have guessed they are the same...

^they are different. You should go to an s52 tensioner. An m50 will not work for reasons youve already said.

The s52 tensioner is both oil and spring loaded whereas m52 tensioner is just spring.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know that the s52 tensioner was different from the m52. I'll definitely check that out.
