M50 Rear main...with or without housing? Will it seal??

About to swap to an M20 clutch/FW setup on my Ti. I'll be changing the rear main of course BUT do you guys pull the housing too? I'm only concerned with the possibility that it won't form an oil-tight seal against the old(original) oilpan gasket. I have RTV grey, which is a gasket alternative...

I have extra housings, so preparing one beforehand is easier and less stressful then say, not removing the housing on the car and prying the old one out while it's sitting on the crank.

I'm thinking that oil pan gasket will leak. If I understand you correctly, you're proposing to remove the rear main seal "housing" and just swap it with another spare housing in which you've installed the new seal.

Unless you're replacing the oil pan gasket, I wouldn't remove the housing. Replacing the seal with the housing installed is really nbd. Just be careful not to score the bore of the housing when you pry it out. Also it's probably a good idea to use some special sealant in the bore when you install the new seal - curil t is the oem recommended sealant. I use it with every seal I install and none have leaked yet. Also, use a quality seal. No reinz.
