How to bleed swapped cooling system?

Ska nailed it - 1/8" hole in mine and like he said "hole UP" - this isn't even a funky rig-up to do this - my '97 Toy Landcruiser just got a new OEM t-stat last year - had a hole and the FSM said "hole up" too.

all i know is i've bled more than one e30 m50 perfectly fine without drilling anything i'd prefer a non drilled tstat than a drilled tstat, but whatever works.

lots of tstats come with a hole predrilled in them, just depends on the vehicle and manufacture.

This is true. My OE (that means it's from a BMW dealership ) thermostat did not come with one, but this thread has convinced me to take it to work tomorrow and get it drilled.

Pretty much. Make sure the coolant spits out of the expansion tank by the cap.

Hold on. Lets clarify here, the hole is in the stat not the housing. Its factory and Its on mine that I got from the dealer.

Just burp it and it will clear itself after it reaches temp, with the interior stat open and on of course.

There is a little return hose from the radiator. With the system flowing and the stat open coolant will come out that hole, its just a topflow return to the overflow tank. If it doesnt then the rad isnt 100% full of coolant.

I think this is my problem. Coolant is not flowing back into the radiator; this is what caused my confusion. I tried bleeding it the conventional way so obviously coolant is not flowing like it should.

Have any ideas how I go about correcting this. I'm fairly sure it's not the tstat itself as it wasn't replaced to long ago by the previous owner. Also, the radiator hoses are warm which lead me to believe that coolant was flowing like it was supposed to.

I think every should be good now. After the bleeding, i drove around to get it up to normal temp, and then let my car idle for about 10 mins. No more creeping up to the 3/4.
