    Mods to my m50 need advice please!!

    Hey, I recentlly purchaced s52 injectors 21.5lbs and s50 cams. My m50 is practiclly stock, all i have is the e36 m3 cats and a ITG p-flow. I would like to get with this setup from turner a custom chip. My question is should i also get the bigger 3.5 MAF (AFM) and is there out there a bigger throttle body and intake manifold... Also i currentlly have a 3.73 diff not lsd, i'm in the process of getting either 3.91 lsd or 4.10lsd and do the diffs off a IX have a better % of lsd...
    Thanks,

    Thanks,

    Throttle body can be had from Dinan, or yours can be sent out to be bored. It doesn't really realize much power for the money. About 2 or 3 hp from my own experience with an e36 M50tu project I did.

    Things like s50 cams, JC intake, underdrive pullies, headers, free flow exhaust, Siemanns cat, big bore throttle body, appropriate JC chip, really opens the m50 up. Last dyno done yielded about 192rwhp from those things. The first dyno (completely stock), was about 143rwhp.

    The 3.5" MAF may be a bit of a pain to adapt (or it might not) the software to, but I bet it could be done (you'd need to have the car custom tuned ON the dyno to be sure of a proper tune though).

    Not sure about the manifold, as the stock m50 mani flows really well (for the power that you would see anyway).

    As for the diff, I don't know.

      Interesting, i like this, spacially when i get real facts from someone experienced. Any difference on using a s50 head or bottom (Block) on a M50 if it fit's...

        Diffs from iXes are Viscous. Not a good choice for a performance car.

            Ok, let's say i got the big bore throttle, s50cams, 21.5lbs injectors, custom turner chip, e36 m3 cats, s52 exhaust manifolds and a 3.91lsd or 4.10lsd. Is it possible to use the s50 3.0l block or internals and would this be another great upgrade..

              man,

              with all those mods, wouldn't it have been cheaper just to get a s50 in the first place?

                  You are probably right. But i buy one part at a time not all together, i wait for amazing deals and jump on them. When i first did my swap, the m50 complete engine would go for 1000$ and more as for the s50 3000$. So there was a big gap and i could'int afford it. Besides, it feels like more of a project car in long term. Yes of corse if i had the money right at the begining my choice would of been the s50. Trust me it's not that bad, i know people with m20's spending over 5000$ for there engine.

                          You're confused, 143 wheel hp -> 168hp crank, w/ 15% drivetrain loss

                          As for the 3.0L cams, it's advised to upgrade to the conical valvetrain springs found on the S50/M52/S52 so that the valvetrain doesn't float at higher rpms.

                            The S50 cams i'm getting are from a complete parted out M3 95. So what your telling is i should ask him for the springs also. I've heard of this before, but why people that do this upgrade never mention it, all the say is that it's a direct bolt in. It's good to know thanks, anything alse i should ask him for to get off the S50 Head...

                              The springs aren't required, but if you want that extra bit of top end by eliminating valve float, I'd do it. And get new springs too while you're at it.

                              The S50/M52/S52 head also has lighter lifters and stronger retainers for better high rpm usage. For the whole M3 valvetrain set up, you'd need lifter trays, lifters, retainers, springs, and cams (don't think I'm forgetting anything). Fortunately, these parts also came on M52s, so all I had to do for my m52 head was add the cams.
