    Frankenstein Time; 97 2.8 + 92 2.5

Found a 97 m52 for sale locally, was supposed to be the short block but they threw in the head and all accessories for the same price. Car was hit (or maybe run over) in the front, theres a crack in the head but the block survived. Tranny was sold though :(

Am I correct in assuming i have everything i need to do this between the complete m50 w/wiring harness/ecu and the long block m52? I know that custom tuning will need to be done, possibly a custom chip. Anyone know of a company that can or has done this?

Any other info would be appreciated and i will post any info or problems i come across in this thread.

        here is some info:

but you will probably want to get some new parts from these guys

they have pretty much all the parts you'll need to do the swap.

        good luck

listen to any good emo lately?
are there any shops in cbus that have unichip facilities? you could have a custom chip burned for you car. that would probably be the best option. i'm not sure an 'off the shelf' chip would work very well for what yer trying to do.

yeah, ill have to look into that. I was thinking more along the lines of if it was more commonly done, then maybe someone has one made. Seemed like a longshot but ill have to go custom or megasquirt.

thanks but its not on the car anymore. Its a shame cause it was alot of work to fix the threads that had bolts broken off in them.

                    No.

An off the shelf chip is the best option BY FAR. Call Active Autowerke or Turner Motorsports, one of them will probably have what you need.

Run a chip for a 2.5 with an adjustable FPR

I like the last option, run an adjustable FPR. Not only is it cost effective, but it can be adjusted to taste whereas an AA or Turner chip still assumes 2.5L displacement and better fuel than regular assed fuel. Also, the 402/3 DME has no provisions for knock sensors. Custom tuning is $. Last I checked Turner and Stickley both charge in the $650 range.

I thought long and hard about a similar setup, except with a 3.0L bottom end. Then I figured, it would be more beneficial to step up and get an S50. The upgrade path is more defined and there has been a lot of research on it already.

Adjusted to taste = screwed up.

They have chips on the shelf for a lot of non-standard engine configurations. Active has one for S50 cams in an M50 for example.

Not all chips are created equal.

Yes, there's a lot of off-the-shelf software for non-standard engine configs. There aren't many that I know for non vanos engines.

S50 cams in an M50TU doesn't require opening up the bottom end or taking the head off. It's just a cam swap.

Engine configs that are a lot more involved, such as a stroker 2.9L M50TU, aren't "off the shelf" and thus the software is not $250, or even $350. Last I heard AA charges around $800 for their 2.9 M50TU software. Of course, it adds things like tuning for custom cams, custom compression ratio, and a 3.5" HFM. However, many non-stock configurations are taken on as a "custom" basis, and the software is priced accordingly.

IIRC Stu Mc runs a RRFPR in his 3.0L S50 and there's really nothing wrong with his setup. Plenty of power, doesn't lean out in the upper ranges, gets decent gas mileage if you take it easy.
