Anyone have this? Does the muffler even fit back there without sitting all stupid? I'm trying to quite down my track car because some local tracks have sound level limits.

We have done it many times. Need to modify stock piping a little bit to make a perfect fit. -
Sweet. It sits straight back there? And it doesn't hang too low? You don't have any pics of any do you?Comment

I have stock S52 muffler on my swap and it hangs down a little low for my taste, about as low as the spare wheel well. I have any early-MY car too, so its really obvious without the late-MY rear valance. I can post some pictures in a couple of days.
I plan on swapping it out once I can figure out a good DD muffler without all the drone.Comment

How much modification does the stock piping need? I've got about six E36 exhaust sitting around.... Would an E30 catback bolt up to the E36 pipe?Comment

I believe the m20 exhaust tubing diameter is slightly smaller. The e36 midpipe to catback connection is also offset where the e30 connection is even.
It was recommended to me to just reuse the stock e36 odb2 exhaust (or at least the midpipe), so I am sure there are plenty of people with different methods and experiences. I also liked this idea, because the believe the OEM silencers and cats fit nice and flush to the E30 chassis unlike some of the other exhaust builds I've seen. I also just kept the stock muffler, because I was really concerned about drone on the aftermarket catbacks. I believe there is a bavauto article where they did it on one of their swap cars too.
I ended up taking it to an exhaust shop to have it modified:- front exhaust manifold was modified so that the output was running nearly horizontal to clear the subframe and the chassis sidewall.
- midpipe was modified accordingly
- O2 sensor plug was rotated ~90degrees so that the sensor could clear
- 2 hangers were added
