    328 parts on non-VANOS M50

Ok, so I read somewhere(can't quite remember) that you can use 328 (ie 2.8l) crank and rods, with stock 2.5l pistons to acheive a solid 11:1 compression ratio. Anyone know of the validity of this?
Reason I ask is because I am thinking of doing this before I drop the M50 in, along with a few other things.

the bore in the M50 and M52 is the same. In the m52 it is the crank and pistons that are of difference (I think both rods are 140mm) either way It would work as long as you crank the motor slowly and make sure a valve waffleswaffleswaffles not slap a piston.

In my personal opinion I would just install the M52 crank, rods, AND pistions, to give your self the stocky 2.8 (minus VANOS)

The nice thing about that is your all motor set-up what your looking for will NOT be worth the time.

There are two things you should do.

      either A go turbo

      or B go all motor

here is the way you should do either option.

for turbo just put your 2.8 crank rods and pistons in, this way you have a nice 2.8 to spool a turbo instead of a 2.5 ALSO the 2.8 crank is forged the 2.5 is NOT forged. then get a turbo kit but it will cost prolly around 4K for this plus 500 for the 2.8 parts.

PLAN B (which is probably what you want to do)

      buy these parts:

      s50 crank
      s50 rods
use your M50 pistons since the bore on the s50 is different.

this set-up will yield you a 2.9 stroker, as well as a 11.5:1 Compression ratio.

the only other thing you need is good software. AA sells the 2.9 software for 800 BUT until july 31 you can buy it FOR ONLY 400!!!!! that's an AWESOME deal.

this set-up will be very reliable and will yield around 260 rwhp!!! (ALL MOTOR) with a 3.5 MAF and exhaust/intake 24# injectors. or you can get the mild software for no injectors or MAF and exhaust and still yield about 220 rwhp.

this set-up is awesome, and yes you need the software, with 11.5:1 CR in a BMW motor is very high, you must run 93 octane NO LESS..... any more higher of a CR then most people put octane booster in each tank to bump it to over 96 octane.

this set-up may not sound reliable but really is ESPECIALLY with the software.

      does this help you out??

forgot to mention, those numbers for the 2.9 are also with s50 cams,

which you cant use on a non-vanos motor,

but heres what you can do

put your intake cam on your exhaust side and buy a schrick 252 intake cam for your intake and it will be the same or better, (i think better but it's at least the same)

Ok, thanks for clearing that one up for me. Exactly what I wanted to hear. I was planning on putting the intake cam on the exhaust side and all that.
          Thanks for the info.

so you have an non-vanos m50? i dont think the 3.5hfm will work with the non-vanos m50 harness / ecu. you might want to double check.

            cheers, jason

eh, i was thinking of going alpha/N for that reason though. not sure right now though as I will be working on the engine for a while before it goes in.

actually I think you are right about the MAF not working with the non-vanos motor.

you can find out for sure on bimmerforums though.

What about putting an M50 (single or no VANOS) on the 2.8 short block?
Or maybe even on a M54 3.0 block?
