automatic m50 question

    automatic m50 question

    A local junkyard is going out of business and offered to sell me a 95' m50, with 90k for 300 bucks if I pulled the motor. However, the car is an automatic and I am wondering how well the motor will handle high revs after being somewhat babied connected to an automatic all it's life. Is there any problem associated with this or am I just imagining things? Also, is this motor somehow different being an automatic or will a getrag 260 mount right up like all other m50s? Thanks.

    I would not worry about engine being connected to automatic transmission. You need to get flywheel for manual (M20 if using Getrag 260) and take a look at wiring more carefully, since there are interconnections between engine and gearbox ECU's. Worst case scenario would be buying manual ECU for engine.

      motor is the same. you will need a flywheel (as earlier mentioned) and clutch kit (dont forget to install the pilot bearing.) the ecu's are the same between auto's and manuals. however, there are a lot of wires on an automatic that you will need to eliminate and cap. cheers, jason

          technically no.......but yes you will want to. the automatic trans has its own seperate computer. that whole bundle needs to be removed. most of the wires go to the trans, but some also tap into the engine ecu harness. carefully eliminate.

              yes you can.

              a step further, try and trace al the wires to junctions that bundled up together, so it is safer that way, and neater too

              there maybe 1 or 2 looped ground wires, if so, trace them back and see if it needs to be grounded

                  Most people I know would prefer buying a motor from an automatic because it has been babied all it's life...
