Need help with speedometer on m52 swap

    Hi,
I am hoping someone would be able to help me out with figuring out how to properly get the speedometer wired in on my m52 swap.

The motor is an m52, using the wiring harness from a 1997 328i...the wiring harness is pretty much complete and ready to be installed, but I noticed I am missing a signal for the speedometer.

In all of the research I have done I have done I have found that on the m50/s50 motors pin 14 is used to bring the signal to the instrument cluster via the green plug on the back of the cluster.

On the m52 harness, pin 14 is not occupied, and after going through the wiring diagram I have not been able to find any reference to pin/wire 14, or a dedicated vehicle speed signal that is needed.

Does anyone know how to properly wire in the speedometer signal? From my understanding this missing signal will cause the car to go into limp mode when it is driven

    Thanks

The speedometer uses a sensor in the diff that goes to the cluster. It never goes near the engine harness. The green plug you mentioned is sending VSS (vehicle speed signal) to the DME. If you do not provide this signal to the DME, you will get a VSS code and the car will have a reduced redline.

      Thanks for the response M3PO.

After digging through the diagrams more and talking to a couple of people, it looks like on the OBD2 e36 harness the only wire carrying VSS is through pin 9, which is for abs/asc on the e36...

So it seems like a wire needs to be spliced into the wire going to the green plug, and pin/wire #9 to deliver the signal to the dme
