Wiring a Check Engine Light (CEL)

I have an '89 318i that didnt come with a CEL in the cluster originally.
As i'm in the process of getting the car ready to drop the M52 in, i decided i'd wire in a CEL to the cluster as well.

Now my C101 - x20 adapter has pin 12 of the c101 connected to pin 8 of the x20 which i'm sure is correct, however it probably wont mean anything as the cluster isnt configured for it.

i've looked at the ETM for the car my engine came from, and pin 8 of the x20
appears to trace back to pin 52 of the DME, however this is also used for the exhaust flap valve. Is this right?

Can anyone who's wired in a CEL to a MS41.x DME advise which pin from the dme is used to ground the CEL?

    Thanks
