    S52 "core only" any good?

    Hi folks,

Well, I just got off the phone with a local wrecking yard. They have an S52 from a 1997 M3 with 64,000 kilometres (Canadian car). Problem is that it is "core only". Apparently, the head was knocked off the block in the impact. I was just wondering, depending on what the guy says he wants for it, is it worth picking up and rebuilding?

What questions should I ask? What should I look for? What would be a fair price for this "core" to make this work?

    Thanks

    Mark

The head was knocked off the block. There is no freaking way I would touch that engine for anything.

x2,, the headbolts could have shredded the block on impact too.... don't touch that thing with a ten foot pole

Ohhhh....I guess I was a wee bit optimistic...

          Thanks guys. You've saved me.

I guess I was a little optimistic that the aluminum head, or maybe just the bolts would have sheared. I was thinking that maybe the iron block, crank, con rods, pistons, valves and miscellaneous others might be good enough to work with?

It's on the way to my parents' place and I was going that way tomorrow anyway, so should I stop in and see it for myself? You are right though, that must have been some impact!!! Curious what the carcass looks like.

Thanks again... that's why I'm here!

The crank is probably still good.

                  Hi all,

I didn't make it to that place yesterday. I spent the whole day grinding rust off the bottom of my doors...notorious E34 thing. POR-15 goes on today. Maybe I should just leave that S52 be. I'm nowhere near ready for it anyway. But still curious what that wreck looks like. I'll keep you posted.
