the e36 oil pan is about 7qt (6.9), but the e34 pan only holds 6.1qts.

First off holy thread bump I know. I want to clear this up because there seems to be unresolved confusion. I usually put 6 quarts in my car but when I go up long hills my oil light comes on. The dipstick says its at the right level though. But if I put in the dipstick from my NV it says its low. So what is it? 6 quarts or 7 quarts?
