4.10 seems to high numerically for a m50. but then again I dont know the gear ratios of the 240. seems like the standard 260 with 3.73lsd or ZF and 3.25/46lsd are the preferred combos. but if you just have the 240 and 410 lying around, give it a whirl. report back.

if it was me I would sell the 4.10 and pick up a 3.73 or somethin. You'll even have 50-100 to show for it.

If you plan to use the 240, then a 3.46 or 3.63 lsd is a better choice.

The gearing is fine, 3.73 or 4.10 is alright with the E30 gearbox ratios. 3.46 would be too long IMO. As for the 240 gearbox and small-case diff, they will probably be toast quickly if you are unsmooth.

I've heard the 240 stands up pretty well to the m50 and is used with some s50's as well..its not like its been possible been abused/worn out by a 318:)...to me its almost the same as using the 260 IMO.....as for the diff we'll see.:pimp:

                oops that's what I meant. 3.46 for a E36 gearbox.

                  What?

Have you ever seen the two next to each other?

The 240 and 260 are very similar (at least from the outside).

Ive been running an m50tu with the 240 and both 3.45 and 3.91 diffs (small case). They held up pretty well with the old M20 engine, and so far survived the M50. The 4.1 creates more torque than the loger diffs , so it may not hold up as well.
What is the intended use of the car? Daily driving, tracking or a combination? The use will dictate both the preffered ratio and preffered case size.

mostly daily driver during the non winter months / occasional track car...if the diff does go i can pick up an large case 3.73LSD so i will do so.

I'm trying to use a 4.10 with my m50 swap to. I posted the same question a week ago in the drivetrain forum and someone told me that they can support 210 ft/lbs. of torque. I'll let you know how it works out in a couple weeks.

If that 4.10 is from an e36, dont even waste your time. I have been through 3 of those diffs...each lasting about 2-3 weeks. But I had it mated to an OBD1 M52 engine... If its an E30 M3 4.10 it will take a beating like no other
