    Rod Bearing Replacement

Hey everyone, so I have been running my S50B30 at 7500 rpms for a while now with a fully built head. Last weekend after a pass on the runway and one small drift, it developed as nasty tick driving through the parking lot. It had good oil pressure at idle but wouldn't build pressure like it should.

I welded the oil pump nut but three oil the bolts holding the guts into the pump looked like this:

And subsequently, my rod bearings look like this:

That is by far the worst of the lower bearing shells. Most have pitting which surprised me. I haven't pulled the tops yet but the crank looks good and I wasn't able to pick up any iron out of the oil I drained.

So the question is, is it safe throw new bearings in and button it back up? If so, how do I figure out which bearings I need? I can only measure the crank journals and not the rods.

I should mention that I believe this motor has ~120K miles.

I'm planning to plastiguage the new bearings but I'm not sure whether to order standard bearings or oversized. Can I tell that just from measuring the crank journals?

you only need oversize bearings if the crank has been machined.

if you pull the bearing shells, they should have part numbers on the backs that will tell you if they're oversize or not. the crank will usually also have a marking somewhere on the counterweights - look for a red or blue dot.

honestly those don't look too bad compared to some bottom ends I've destroyed. I suspect your ticking was from the top end - when the lifters don't get full oil pressure they tend to tick.
