    Diagnosing OBD1 CEL

I have an 89 with a 99 S52 and ZF trans that has been converted to OBD1 and is running a red label ECU. Today on my way home from work after I had just left the office the CEL came on. I have only had the car for a little over 6 months and 1,200 miles. It is just a weekend/fair weather vehicle for me and doesn't get much use especially this time of year in CT. This is the first time the car has thrown a CEL for me.

I was wondering if there is any way to easily diagnose the CEL. I know OB2 is much easier for this kind of thing and it seems is the way to go with the swaps nowadays but from what I understand the swap was done several years ago now and well before it came into my ownership.

To add insult to injury this is my first E30 and first BMW all together. I like to think I'm pretty handy with this kind of stuff I'm just looking for some guidance on where to start since I don't have much experience with this car yet.

Did you run a stomp test? Here is a video of how to run one: https://youtu.be/5GlBsrOSefg

I gave that a shot but was not able to get it to show anything. I will give it another try later but would an S52 swap display codes properly like that or does that only work on stock E30s?

The stomp test is sometimes a bit tricky to perform. Practice a bit and make sure you follow the instructions to a T. It doesn't matter what engine it is, it's dependent on the DME and your red 413 is one of the DMEs that is configured to work with the stomp test.

There is one little issue that could cause problems for you, and that is if your throttle body is not opening all the way. If the TPS (on the throttle body) doesn't report full throttle to the DME, the stomp test won't work. Make sure your throttle cable is tight enough to open the TB all the way.

The stomp test should work if the CEL is wired properly. But the OBD1 code that it will give you will most likely not be much help in finding the issue lol! OBD1 sucks :-/
