    S52 6speed?

Ok ive been trying to figure a better way to swap to 6 gears with an s52. Ive heard *some* e36 guys say the Z4 3.0 6speed will bolt up to to s52. Im trying to confirm this, anyone ever heard of it?

idk but people have tossed around the idea of a 6 spd and just concluding that its not worth the pro's.

man thats allota money for one extra gear. isnt that close to the price of an s52? also doesnt the six speed weigh more?

someone on here wrote that you can take the six speed from a 330 ci or something and put it in (i dunno which model year or even if a 330ci has a six speed option i just read it somewhere on here)

Im currently getting the bits together for a six speed conversion on my M50.
Ive got this ZF box from a 2004 E46 320Cd sport coupe which apparantly shares the box with the 330Ci.

It mates up to the block no problem at all, all the bolt holes are there and ive worked out I can use an M3 spigot bearing. Im trying to sort out a clutch I can use with my M20 lightweight flywheel ATM but thats as far as ive got.
It doesnt weigh as much as I was expecting, probably only one or two Kg's more than the 5 spd version.

I know the Euro e36 6-speed tranny will work.
I have also heard that the z4 tranny works, but have yet to see one in an e30.

I stumbled across it by complete chance really, had to make a decision to buy it based on what is was worth and what I could sell it on for, I knew it was a six speed, what it came from and it had done 18,000 miles, the bolt pattern looked the same but I didnt have a clue about the ratio's. (Still not completely certain)
I paid £200 (approx 380 USD) so if it doesnt go I know I can double my money;)

The euro e36 m3 6 speed (getrag) is the right choice for cars that will have some more than solid power.

The E46 330 and the z4 6 speed (Zf) is the same dimensions and same gear ratios as the euro e36 peice. It is also much lighter and brand new only costs about $2000.

The only downside to the E46 or z4 unit is that it isn't nearly as beefy as the getrag euro e36 m3 unit. It should work fine unless you're planning a 300+rwhp car that will see some track duty.

EDIT: The z4 6 speed has already been used in a couple of m50/s50 swaps here.

So say an OBDI S52 S/C'd would require a euro box?

                      Brian

I was really hoping to keep down the weight and cost of this part.

How much do z4 trannys sell for? I guess if it was only a grand or so for a used one it would be well worth it.

Also, was it the 2.5 or 3.0 tranny?

                            been covered before

for mine i used the eurobox, standard gearshift parts from the eurobox-still have a spare fullset for sale, customised gearbox mount, standard e36 gearbox mount rubbers

for the longshaft, some have cut and welded and balanced the shaft, mine i had the oppurtunity to pick and choose different lengths from different cars

for the fronts-e36 320,325,328 front shafts and matched with e36 318,m43/m44,325 rear longshafts
i can't recall the exact model, but i'm pretty sure the front shaft i got is from and auto box

while you are at it you could change your rear differential to either a 3.45 or 3.64, as the standard gearbox ratio for the m50 gearboxes are 3.25 on the e36s.
