E34 has oil sump at the front. E36 at the back.

black sticker on cylinder head is the vin number

The back of the cylinder head should have a sticker on it with the VIN of the car it came from.

there are also marks on the block that you should be able to match up to what model and year the motor came from. That was the only way I was able to match up my motor to the e39 it came form (verify it was indeed a 2.8 vs 2.5 motor).
