    Average cost of S50 rebuild?

I'm looking to do a top and bottom end rebuild.

Where can I get some of the harder to find parts?

    What about 92' M50?

Off the top of my head:

    Bottom End Parts
    S50 Rings $250
    Main and rod bearings $110
Bottom end gasket set (includes RMS, FMS, timing case gasket, oil pan gasket) $60
    Rod bolts $35
    Main bolts $15
    Timing chain tensioner rail $75
Timing chain plastic clip in rail $30
    Oil pump $225
    EDIT: Main timing chain $35
    EDIT: Oil pump chain $15

    Top End Parts
    24 conical springs $144
    24 spring retainers $80
    48 retainer collets $32
Top end gasket kit (includes valve stem seals, HG, most all ancillary gaskets) $150
    Head bolts $15
    Primary chain tensioner $90
    Secondary chain tensioner $50
    Vanos unit $430
    EDIT: 24 hydraulic lifters $384
    EDIT: Upper timing chain $25

    Machine Shop Work
    Thermal clean block $75
Hone cylinders $100 (assumes S50 block has no lip and just needs a slight clean up hone)
    Clean and deck head $75
    3 angle valve job $300-400
    Polish cams $50
    Clean and mic valves $50-100

    Total is $2500 or so.
EDIT: Plus $500 for the parts I forgot, so total is actually closer to $3000

You'll need a few specialized tools to time the engine correctly. An M50 build won't cost as much, but it will be up there. There'd be little reason to rebuild a M50 from the ground up because the costs are close enough. You wouldn't need a Vanos unit, though. Of course, the build that is shown above will last a long, long time.

If you choose to wait until the Vanos unit kicks the bucket because yours already works fine for the time being, you can save a bit of up front cash. I'm sure if you shop around for some of the parts you can save a little money, and you don't necessarily need new springs if the rates are still OK. But if you plan on hopping the engine up with some hotted up cams, new springs aren't too bad of an idea.

agreed, but prices seemed a little low for parts and labor. but then again, we used all oe, dealer or better parts. none of that cheap junk. i think i spent 2800 without the new vanos. but i also replaced all the valve guides. cheers, jason

So depending on how much you initially spend on an S50, a rebuilt one from a supplier could be a good move?

        Like Bavarian Auto Recycling?

        S50 M3 95-96 MaxSil™
        1404959 / Tefcote™
        Upgrade Rebuilt = $5,322
        Performance Rebuilt = $6,622
        Clutch Kit = $295

        S52 M3 97-98 MaxSil™
        1405513 / Tefcote™
        Upgrade Rebuilt = $5,322
        Performance Rebuilt = $6,622
        Clutch Kit = $295

The plug and play convenience of a rebuilt engine can't be denied. No waiting for the machine shop, sourcing parts, etc. HOWEVER, if I were going to spend almost $7 grand on an engine, I'd get it done by a BMW race shop like VAC Motorsports or CSS Motorsports. If I wanted a stock rebuild, I'd buy it from my friendly local BMW dealer. They run right around $5500 with no accessories, IIRC.

A rebuildable S50 is probably only around $1000 - 1200 with no accessories. So, add $2500 - $2800, and you're at around $4500, and you won't have to pay any freight charges getting the rebuilt engine to your door.

I believe the Bavarian Auto Recycling pistons are second overbore, so the bottom end is on its last rebuild. You won't be able to bore the block out any further.

Jason, I was figuring using a piece of tar paper instead of a real head gasket, and cutting out six holes for the pistons using some left handed scissors. HAHAHAHA.

Nah, those are actual prices I paid for most of the stuff, minus shipping. Ancillaries like spark plugs, thermostat housing, water pump, Vanos oil line, new knock sensors, etc. will all add up quickly.

I forgot to add in the timing chains and the oil pump chain, and also 24 new lifters. That's another $384 for new lifters. Oops! I guess at the same time you might want to replace the vanos spring plate.

So altogether i'd have to pick up a rebuildable S50 for about $2500, and then spend $3k+ for a rebuild? Since this would be my second engine build, and I couldn't afford screwing it up, i'll have to consider a dealership engine. Or rebuild the 92' M50, with a turbo a couple years down the road. The S50 is such a better platform though, SCHEIßE.

Why don't you just get a low-ish mileage S50 engine? They're probably around 3K for something with like 70-80K on it, and it'll have plenty of miles left in it?

Yea, i'm consdering that too, they're just so hard to come by. Plus you've got to find one built after 11/95, so that thins the already thin crop. Although I guess a little refresh of the head wouldn't be a bad idea.

Yeah, doing the retainers isn't too bad. I just did them in my 7/95 engine. You don't need compressed air or any rope tricks or stuff like that.

Just bring each cylinder to TDC and the valves won't drop into the cylinder bores. The only real tools you need are the cam lock tool, a good torque wrench capable of low torques, a set of calipers, a Vanos test fitting, and if you're feeling extravagant, the VPD spring compressor tool. It's like $75.

Sounds good. Is yours' up and running yet? Pictures/videos? There aren't enough videos of DOHC E30s on this board. I want high RPM fly-bys, 0-60, 50-70, 80-120, etc!

Naw, not yet. I just buttoned the engine up, and I'm getting ready to drop it in.

Rev Engineer bought a set of rings directly from Deves for around $260.

Most of the parts are quoted from fap99.com, bimmerworld (for retainers, collets, vanos unit, lifters), or the prices that I got from Circle BMW in NJ. I got a headgasket set from BMA Parts a while ago using a 10% coupon that I received by email, and I think it was like $150 or $160 shipped.
