    M50 wiring help?

Any of you guys done an M50 non vanos swap into early model E30?

Ian332isport from the E30zone kindly did me a wireing diagram to link the E34 engine harness, which i might add has worked first time, except for one minor problem!
I am not getting any spark or fuel?

What i need is someone who has put a non vanos M50 into an 87(early model) 320i auto to tell me which wire colour (pin) you connected to compare against mine?
I still have the file Ian did for me to compare it to.

Assuming US looms are the same as UK/Europe spec?

im doing my best to stay off my soapbox regarding doing your own work......ETK is your friend.

there are A LOT of different wiring configurations. i doubt it has anything to do with the c101 though. there's only one wire that will keep the nv-m50 from firing.

            cheers, jason

I meant the M50 wires going to the C101.

Which wire do you refer to for not firing?

Check your ground wires, check your relays , and check your fuses. You might have the wiring correct already and something small like a fuse might be holding you back.

Done that lot already, and double checked!
Fuel relay is working fine and there is 12v at both red/white wires going to it but from what Ian has told me the ECU is not telling it to supply fuel.
Also no spark so imagine these 2 are related?

how do you know the fuel relay is working fine?

ok, time for some more information. diagnostics is simply working backwards. just answer these simple questions and viola......the answer will show itself.

is there any fuel pressure if you disconnect the supply line from the fuel rail?
is your fuel supply line connected to the radiator side of the fuel rail?

                    now get a voltometer
is your fuel pump getting power?
                    is the fuse blown?
is the fuse receiving power when your trying to start?
is the fuel pump relay sending power out the green/violet wire?

I know the pump and relay are working ok because i fed a temp 12v to the green/violet wire and it pumped fuel up!

I am getting power into the fuel relay thru the 2 red/white wires.
Not getting and 12v from the relay at cranking???????

As you can tell i am very naive when it comes to car electrics!

nothing wrong with being naive. but i HIGHLY recommend understanding how a wiring diagram works, and how the engine management works. i will gladly help walk you through ANY questions you have regarding understanding the wiring diagrams.

go buy a bentley. turn to page ele-77 (its an electrical diagram.) it shows all the engine management items for the m50 to run. its very simple. look for the fuel pump relay. it will show 4 wires coming out of the fuel pump relay. it will also show what relay pin number AND the color of the wire. you can then start to trace where power should be coming from, and where it should be going.

                        ok, back to your question......

so your telling me that relay pin 85 (red/wht) and relay pin 86(red/wht) are getting power.....but.....whats not getting power when you are cranking?
(wire color or relay pin number.)
                        grn/vio i assume???

                        please verify.

                        cheers, jason

                          Nice one Jason!
I am using a bulb from ashtray light to test for power.

Basically,i switch ignition on,put one end of my tester in the first red/white,touch the other end to earth and it illuminates,
repeat the process on the other red/white and it illuminates too.

Then using the same method,i put one end of tester to battery positive and the other to brown/green to see if it would earth when i crank the engine but it didnt?

brn/green is a switched ground signal from the ecu. (hence the BROWN color to the wire.) WHY are you sending 12v to an ecu ground signal? never mind....i really dont want to know.

I thought that going from the positive on a battery thru the bulb would test ground when cranking?
