944 Brake Booster Confirmation

Just bought a supposed 944 booster new from FCPEuro and need to verify I have the correct one. I compared mine to the pics online on how to modify the 944 booster to fit in your 24v e30. Mine doesn’t have the “hump” like the one pictured in the DIY.

I need to verify with someone else who’s used a 944 booster that the one I have will fit and I’m good to go.

That's the same part number of the one I used on mine. It does fit tight on the firewall but I've not had any issues with it.

Thanks man, I’m starting to think either they updated the design/ shape from the original 30yr old boosters, or maybe Ate/ Girling boosters have a different shape when compared between the two.

My only worry at this point is that “hump” should technically space the booster out further away from the firewall, which means if I use this one I need to cut/ thread the shaft shorter to make up for not having that hump.

Anyone else?

Yes I believe the ATE ang Girling have slightly different mounting designs.

ATE VS Girling

In my swap notes the ATE has a 10 mm shaft that needs to be threaded all the way down and the Girling has a 12 mm shaft. I threaded and cut the shaft on the ATE unit.
My 944 booster looks just like yours.

I noticed that hump was different too when I did my swap. I didn't think much about it until everything was installed and the brake pedal no longer contacted the brake light switch. I had to go back and cut the firewall insulation so that the booster sat flush against the firewall.

I've installed 10 of these by now and have never had a problem with fitment on either the firewall side or the cabin side.

Thats the exact one I've purchased though.

DIY 944 Booster Install



Booster is in! It's not a "direct bolt in" like people claim it is, but it's pretty close. For example, I had to modify a plastic clip which holds one of the hydraulic line's against the firewall otherwise the booster would make contact with it/ wont fit flush. Of course I could have just left the clip off but BMW put it there for a reason so I insisted on keeping it. All I did was trim the clip down a bit to sit more flush against the firewall and it fit perfectly. You can see where it fits onto, I'm pointed at it with some Knipex pliers bellow. You also need to trim the firewall insulation just slightly larger to compensate for a more flat booster. I drew a line with a ruler and cut it a quarter inch larger or so. Unfortunately you do need to bend the lines a little but the good news is the lines will still be held/ retained in all the factory clips located against the body/ frame rail area. Only one clip needs to be removed or do things the right way and make a custom clip like I did. To clarify, no clips at all need to be removed for this booster swap. Factory master cylinder fits perfect. Nothing under the dashboard needs to be modified, its all a direct bolt in afterwords.












And then clip the line in..

Question sir, what brake booster "hose" to manifold are you using? Also are you using a check valve?

I think the 318iS one fits and yes do most certainly use the brake check valve!

as far as putting the clevis in the same spot as the e30 one?
no change because of the flat back?
