So a while back I bought an E36 Threaded starter so that I would never again have to reach behind the bellhousing to put the starter in. I paid $20 for it so I was not expecting much. The starter arrived and looked like it had been underwater for a year or so. I tested it and the solenoid kicked but the motor was fubar. What to do? I figured it was time to go into the starter and figure out what happened.
This is what I found.

So I figured I would swap the top of the starter assembly onto a good E30 lower assembly that I had laying around. But the engagement gear into the bottom end of the starter was different with nearly twice as many teeth.

So what I ended up doing is was swapping the inner motor assemply into the old housing. BY the way all E30 and E36 housings are identical.

Here is the finished unit it is not pretty but it purrs like a kitten
