    Time to replace the clutch

Well my used m42 clutch that I left in while doing my m50 swap didn't hold up to long. Don't ask me why I didn't change it out. I have a brand new clutch disc for an m42 do you think that will hold the power or should I just change my 240 transmission over to a 260 flywheel and clutch? Keep in mind that I'm a broke college student. Also how hard is it to pull the transmission in a m50 swap? I put the engine in with the transmission attached and it looks really tight, how do you get to those top transmission bolts?
    Thanks
    Stu

its NOT fun.....even with a lift.

to get at the upper bell housing bolts, you will need to disconnect the driveshaft, shifter housing, trans brace, loosen motor mounts, rock engine back, and then use a 48" extension bar w/ u-joint with lots of luck. its not fun. ive done a few. once the trans is seperated, you will need to wiggle, pry, twist and pull the transmission out of the bell housing. the headers seem to get in the way. if you left the sound deadening insulation on the fire wall.....its even more fun.

normally i would sign off with "cheers".....but....

    sorry, jason

A 48" extension bar! Where do I find one of those. Is it easier to just pull the entire engine?

I know your local Auto Zone / Advance Auto will carry a 24" extension for pretty cheap. Are you sure you need 48"? The windup on that bar will be sick unless you're using 1/2" drive. Which means $$$.

the first couple of times we didnt have the "big daddy" extension. so we used 4-5 extensions together.

it might have been a 42" .... but you get the idea.

Ah I see Jason, you were trying to loosen the bell housing bolts from across the room.

That's the way to do it. It helps to have help, too. One guy to aim, one to turn.

The job is not that hard, even on stands. It will help if you took out the sound deadening.

if you are going to single mass, id suggest using the euro 323i TOB...i dunno if the single 260 flywheel will work with the stock TOB but id get it just be safe cause that would be a bitch if u needed to pull things out beacuse u couldnt disengage the transmission from the motor..reason i know it works is because i am curretnly running this setup.

This is why since I can only aford to do one mod with the swap, it had to be the clutch flywheel kit.

As was mentioned before, this job will be a pain in the ass, so I would highly recommend doing it right the first time and using an upgraded clutch.
I've got a Spec Stage 2 setup in mine and I like it.

A good trick for getting to those upper-most tranny bolts is to tilt the front of the engine up slightly with a tree stand and block of wood under the oil pan.

I don't have the rite tools to get at mine so I usually just pull the motor and trans and sit it on the floor. Heaps easier as I can have the motor out and on the floor in about 1hr 1/2.
