    M50 knock sensor orientation

    Hey I'm putting the knock sensors onto my S52 and Bentley says you have to note the orientation of the sensors before you remove them and install. But they're different on the OBDII and I cars... so I have no idea what the orientation is supposed to be. I don't really get why it even matters but I want to do it right, so can anyone tell me what the orientation on the M50 is? No guesses please, I can guess too. A pic would be best...

    Hey D, I'm going to guess so that maybe someone will come in and correct me, and thus give you some real advice.

    The Bentley probably just means note the orientation as in, make sure you put the one for cylinders 1-3 in the proper place, and the one for cylinders 4-6 in it's proper place, and not get them swapped around?

        I asked blunt about this and he said when he did his swap (obd1 s52) he just slapped the sensors on the block and they've been working fine for 2+ years. No special orientation. He also called one of the service guys at Sears BMW in Minneapolis and the tech said he had never heard of that before. The only knock sensor orientation he was aware of was for the newest 3 series, and only then because of the way the mount is designed. He did say torquing them to spec was important so they don't vibrate loose.
        I'm just going to put them on and go for it.

          i know this is an old thread but.. what is the right way to align them, or how do you figure out which one goes were?

            They are both same part numbers. Before tightening, make sure the orientation of the wire is such that it would be easy to connect it to the appropriate connector afterwards.

            I just came across an official bosch document that says that orientation of this particular sensor doesn't matter for its functionality.
