    m50 questions!

Soo today I went over and looked @ this m50 motor, for my m50 swap, it's missing an intake mani, but i think he said he can get me an s50 mani because his brother swapped the m50 for his s50. It has no tranny, and it's missing some small misc peices. He also told me b4 they took it out the engine was running fine, but they just heard a noise/knocking coming out of the engine, he beleived it was a rod bearing.. but for 100 bucks, I don't think I can loose..

I heard you can rebuild the m50 motor with s50 crank, and cams, to get 3.0 displacement.. I tried searching but I really couldn't find much about it on here, maybe I suck at searching I duno.. if anybody can link me to some threads or give me some info that would be great!

I plan on tearing this motor apart and rebuilding whatever needs to be rebuilt.. it has been sitting for a year so i think it needs to be cleaned! But i was surprised on how clean it was.. It's a 92 m50 with 100k + miles on it.

Also, the max I want to spend on the rebuild of the m50 with s50 internals is 1.5-2k.

here is a pic of the owner of the m50's sick m5

and here is the engine engine that i really want :o lol

Just so you know M50 and S50 (OBD I) intake manifolds are identical. Was one cracked or did his bro have an S52 (OBD II mani)?

Yeah I'd take it for $100 too.

you can't use s50 cams on that engine because it's a non vanos engine.

hmm, 4 some reason i thought it's the opposite? if it's non vanos you can, if it's vanos you can't.. what about the zionsville stroker kit???
I mean, it says only 22 hp gain.. i'm guessing that's to the wheels.. well hoping it would be.. But you can't beat 500 bux for crank, pistons, and all that other stuff it comes with.

but then you have to calculate costs for boring, machine work everything.
just to do a stock rebuild on THAT motor (same one I have) would cost your 1500 for bearings, studs, bolts, belts, chains, tensioner's, idler pulley, water pump, new coolant hoses, ALL new gaskets, then you have to throw in a clutch and every, for the stock clutch kit, with a nice discount, will run about 130/150 bucks. Just think about it. That's all I ask. For the S50 crank, that setup will definitely run you over 2k. Oh, and the zion kit is USED parts from a 328. no 3 liter there.

328 crank and rods + 325 pistons = High compression 240ish hp 2.8 liter motor.

              Do it.

With the non-vanos, you take the intake cam and put it on the exhaust side and buy one schrick or whatever for the intake side, which basically gets you the s50 cam spec. The stock cams are pretty ratty for OE stuff from what i hear.

I really like the idea of the 2.8 liter mostly because the bore is 84mm on the m50 and the s50 has a 86.4mm bore. Not a whole lot but its something to consider. S50 route, you get 240hp or you can use (cheaper) m50/m52 parts and get the same output. Granted you have to use at least 91 octane fuel, preforably higher, with the high comp 2.8. If it was me, i would do the 2.8 or a 2.9 with some aftermarket pistons.

Hope it helps and sorry for the novel.

Yes, it helps alot.. so you are saying I can get a m52 crank, and use the m50 pistons, switch the cams and get 1 extra shrick cam for the intake side.. i will have basically a instant 2.8 stroker?? soo what if i do the same thing, but with a s50 crank?

higher compression, using s50 crank, m50 nv rods, m50 pistons, and a 0.098" thick MLS hg from vacmotorsports you end up with like 11.45:1 CR.

Edit: haven't done the math on the m52(328) crank....

looks like i still will be using 93 octane gas ;)

soo, I just picked up the m50 today.. it seems like it's in good cond. I really do not know were to begin though? I'm thinking go ahead and strip everything down?? And does anybody have any more information about the non vanos 2.9 mini stroker thing?

Well dude, i got my car running but the m50 needs a headgasket so i may be doing the stroker deal. http://www.e30tech.com/forum/viewtop...&highlight=m50 I like that for some good info. Im not sure what one would do for the software for that set up.

Great deal. I would just take my time and build it up to a 2.8 with some bolt ons and a custom chip, that should be plenty of power. I want a non vanos for my E30. Maybe it's engine will blow up by next summer. I just hope my E34 gets fixed before that happens.

hmm, I c what you rae saying.. Instead of a s50 crank you use an m52 one, do you reallly need to use the m52 rods? or say the s50 rods if you go with a s50 crank.. why do you choose m52 over s50?
