    why does my starter squeal?

Long story short I thought my starter was bad internally, but the brand new starter I just got is doing the same thing. Makes a nasty sound as it turns the motor over and squeals once the motor finally starts and I disengage the switch.

What I have, '93 m50 with m50 starter, getrag 260 trans, 'supposedly s50' flywheel/clutch. The flywheel is the same as m50. I've got the plate between the engine and trans installed, but I dont see how that makes a difference. wtf is going on?

Typically you use an E30 clutch/flywheel/starter setup when you use the getrag 260 tranny.

Have you tried turning the motor over by hand without the starter attached?

Well once its running there is no noise, and if I pop start it (which I've had to do recently because of bad connections) there is no noise. It has to be a spacing issue with the starter and flywheel location. My roomates e30 is same year m50 with s52 flywheel/clutch, and m or s54 starter with the g260 trans. His works perfectly. If I cant figure it out, then e30 junk is going back in I guess.
