Air filters part II: 3.5" HFM

I fit the 540 HFM on intake boot and realized how much more space this thing really takes up.

How are you guys accommodating this? I was looking through pictures here and it almost looks like one guy has the HFM inside the filter a bit.

Any air filter recommendations? I'd like to get a paper or something with equivalent filtration ability (not K&N).

from what ive heard you want a little bit of straight pipe between the filter and the meter to minimize turbulance which would cause error in the meter readings

get an adapter, or use silicone and run a downwards elbow, then choose a filter. i have mine directly hooked up, and it works fine. also build some kind of heat shield.

Thank god, someone else who's on the right track.

I wish I could get a paper filter that would package properly in an M50 e30.

You can. I installed an m50tu into an '85 325 and used a Jaguar airbox which fit perfectly behind the headlight area. I'm not sure what model it was from though. The boss just grabbed it from the junkyard.
That e30 didn't have ABS though, so there was more space for the box.

When my m50 started to lose tons of power and run like a old dog when it was warm i relized i see a e32/e34 airbox in my future. fits perfectly with the ABS there and should take in plenty cold air.

that is clean... now the airbox needs to be cleaned to match the rest of the engine bay.

AEM makes a new cone style filter that is like HEPA or something like that. its not gauze/oil like K&N.

To bad the late model E34 airbox is somewhat hard to find.
