Ok, I need help. Really terrible engine vibration on M50 swap.

        this is the first thing to check as we had the same problem..we just used a air hammer to massage a tiny notch in the down pipe,

        the bigger vibrating issue at 1-2k rpms with my buddies M50/E30 turned out to be the use of E21 mounts with the metal cups, he pulled them off and put stock E36 trans mounts on his E30 and it ran smooth as buttah ;)

        its a cheap thing to try so give it a shot for your sanity ;)

          yea, i was kinda suspecting the tranny mounts (uuc rubber reds with cups) i made sure i torque them correct, but still lots of noise being sent all over the whole cabin.
          Has your friend try the e21 mounts with no cups? I am gonna try doing that next.

              I second the tranny enforcers. A friend of mine with a s/c s50 e30 had some serious vibration and noise problems with those cups.

                Even with IE's urethane it is seriously increases NVH, I wouldn't run anything more stiff. I won't be daily driving my beast too much longer hopefully, but it doesn't bother me.

                  ^^ So Live was talking about rubber mounts with aluminum cups. I'd think urethane is noisier than that combo.
                  I am gonna try removing the cups tonite and report results soon.

                  so matt, have you tried removing the cups?

                    Not yet. Exams this week are seriously cutting into my "dicking around with the car" time.

                      Werd. he said anytime he was spinning the motor faster than idle or accelerating or braking he would get serious noise and vibration. With the rubbers and the cups.

                        anyways, i just took the cups off, but you'll have to wait till tomorrow for impressions (no time now)

                        one thing i noticed tho: when i tightened the top studs and the braket nuts, (lower mount nuts off) there was a small gap between the braket and the driver side mount. This kind of makes sense, as i run a 5mm spacer on driver side motor mount to clear the booster, so i am guessing for best results i should put a small washer under the tranny mount? or it's ok like that?

                          the removal of cups helped a tad, but the actual E36 mounts are designed way soft, and for a reason, if you run the E36 stock ones its perfect...no real ill effects thus far using the stock ones and hes put about 5,000+ hard miles on the swap so far

                          its about time i make a new username lol i havent had my 84 E30 in like 4 years hahaha

                              UPDATE:

                              noise at low speed (1st gear, low rpm 2nd) is the same :( but...
                              there is almost no nasty noises when on highway and releasing the throttle completely (i.e total engine braking; that one was really pissing me off)
                              So i am guessing i am gonna go with stock e36 ones next to see how it pans out.

                              I was also surprised how getto the braket fastening solution is on an e30 - i mean the long slots and all and the studs that rotate freely if the notch is not locked in the slot (i.e if you raise it up a bit).

                                just another quick update

                                i installed stock tranny mounts and the ride is somewhat quieter, but i expected much better results. So my saga fighting noises continues (maybe i should just buy a mercedes)
