    code 1226, O2 & VANOS questions

I recently finished my S50 engine swap. The car would start but it wasn't running properly since the O2 sensor wasn't installed yet. I just got my car back from having my exhaust installed.

The car is running rough. I did the pedal trick and it flashed code 1226. I understand that could be a knock sensor problem. Before I do that I wanted to ask a simple question.

I used my M20 O2 sensor in my OBDI E36 cat. Is the M20 sensor the same as the S50 O2 sensor?

I also have an issue with my VANOS unit. The VANOS seems loud. Outside of a VANOS replacement what are my options to troubleshoot the VANOS?

    I appreciate any input.

I know i didnt have the cam position sensor hooked up by accident and my m50 ran really bad something to check out. It was real lopy and seemed like idle was searching. Make sure its timed correctly too! Im using the e30 o2 sensor with out any problems. I dont know about the vanos stuff, sorry.

Where is the cam position sensor?

I guess I should check all the sensors to make sure everything is hooked up properly (my water temp gauge isn't working even though I installed the E36 temp sensor).

      Thanks for the feedback.

The cam sensor goes into the head right behind the Vanos soleniod. Just follow that wire to the connector.

Paul, you want to use the e30 water temp sensor, otherwise it won't read properly for your e30 gauge.

Lobstrosity -- I made a mistake in my earlier post. I swaped out the E36 water temp sensor and installed an E30 water temp sensor prior to installing the S50.

I just played around with the car for a few minutes. The water temp sensor wire was unplugged so my temp gauge works now.

Still haveing the same issue. I drove the car about 2 miles. The engine doesn't sound good. The VANOS unit is noisy. The CEL flashed as I was parking the car. The car flashed code 1226.
