M50 Non Vanos..waste Of Time?

but what happens when you mix m52 rods, s50 crank, and m50tu pistons in a NV? muhuhahahahahah -
Your loss.Bullshit.
The M50 is MUCH better than an M20, and is certainly not just your basic M20 w/ an extra cam. It is far more modern, with a dramatic reduction in internal friction, and is very easy to take apart and maintain. Vanos is useful for improving every-day driveability, but it is not resilient, especially as compared to Honda's bulletproof VTEC setup. I'll take a non-Vanos M50, thanks.
BTW: there were big changes throughout the bottom end between the M50 and the M50TU. How do you think it made the same peak HP with less agressive cams? Much lighter rotating assembly, and the compression bump, which was made possible by better engine management (knock sensors)
The NV M50 only feels faster because the HP and torque curves are steeper. The Vanos M50TU has much more area under the curve... it doesn't feel as "rev-happy" because it has more torque. Stock for stock, Vanos motors are faster every time.Leave a comment:

Sorry.
There is nothing awesome about the M50. It's basically a DOHC M20. The M50TU is a kickass motor with a ton of potential.Leave a comment:

I personally like the non-Vanos M50 --- the spiritual successor to the M42, a sturdy beehive that likes to rev, the kind of motor I really enjoy. Reasonably hot cams, dual valve springs, and no Vanos to break.Leave a comment:

Whew, good thing it turned out to be a collapsed lifter!
I think it all depends on sourcing the engine. Sometimes it's easier to find an S52. Sometimes not.Leave a comment:

Hehe, thats especially funny cause I actually thought I did a few weeks ago at NHIS. I overrevved on a 4-3 downshift and had a pretty serious tick that didn't go away. Turned out to be a collapsed lifter though...
To answer madjurgen, nah, I'm glad I went with the S50. If I were to go with an S52, I'd probably try to keep the OBD2 anyways. And since this car is going to be a weekend warrior/ track rat after this driving school season, I don't really need/want any more power.Leave a comment:

But seriously, if you have a tired M20, an M50 with lower mileage will definitely be a kick in the pants. I've been in a car with a pretty fresh M20 and it pulls pretty hard. If it wasn't very fresh, then I'd consider the NV M50.
If it were me, I'd hang around for a Vanos M50, that way upgrading to an S52 would be painless. Just strip all of the OBD-I stuff off the M50 and hang it on the S52.Leave a comment:

As someone who daily drove a non-vanos m50 e30 for a year and a half, and now an s50'd e30 for about 15 months...
...not worth it.
Save your money for M-Powa!Leave a comment:

Its a good replacement for a shot single cam. If you can get it for a deal go for it.
Im using one for my swap. I didnt get any real deal on one either. I just like the non vanos for its simplicity so, Im just weird I quess.
