    e30 m50 for drifting

    Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I'm planing to swap m50 engine out of e34 525i and I'm wondering which engine is better the vanos or non-vanos one for drifting purposes ?

    Thanks a lot, Martin.

You will get flames for the drifting, just a warning.

As for vanos/non vanos, I'd go ahead and get the vanos engine. If you want to turbo it and use MS, you may want the non-vanos because it may be simplier to tune.

If you don't know how, then you shouldn't.

Bottomline, this isnt a question that depends on the fact you'll be drifting. You need an m50-head to help you out on the extra costs and hassles for having a VANOS motor and if it's really worth the extra bucks.

M50TU (vanos) is better than a M50 (non vanos).

Yeah, but (for my own interest here) how much harder is it to swap a VANOS motor to an e30?

It really doesn't make much of a difference. If you're putting a vanos motor in then you need a vanos wiring harness and DME, if not then you use non-vanos stuff obviously. The wiring you have to modify for the swap doesn't have any effect on vanos and the small space difference the vanos actuator takes up on the head makes it moot.

                    sigh. ok master

Anyways if i where you go with the m50tu. Drop all the bolt ons available into it and have some fun. The reason i suggest the m50tu is because

                    1. it has vanos
                    2. you can buy s50 cams which are relatively cheap compared to schricks.
                    3. you can get one right out of a e34 525i which has your oilpan, sump and all the goodies so that you do not have to swap pans and pickups etc etc.

                    Basically m50tu> m50

                      e34 m50

The one problem with e-34 swap is that the wiring harness is too short so you cannot put the dme in side the car.. it's a pain.. you really need e-36 engine harness, also the e34 exaust (manifolds, and cat's) won't fit the e30 chassis (need e36 again)and last but not least the motor mounting arms won't work,(need the e36 )again!....So if you ask me it's easier to get the e36 car (wrecked) and e34 oil pan and dip stick along with the oil pick up...I got the pan from bone yard for $130 and the rest of the parts at bmw $42 dollas! Oh and by the way unless you have a 3:15 or 3:23 rear in your car do not use the e36 trans the gearing is way off for 3:73 and 4:10 either use e36 m3 trans(zf) or keep the 260 getrag (that's what i should have done).
So here is my 2 cents.

Wow had no idea about the exhuast manifold, and the harness. You can pull the harness off any e36 m50tu?

an s52 would be best they have nice tq between 2500-3500rpms so its really easy to down shift into a corner then get a nice slide in with some tire burning but drifting is kinda stupid its basilcly saying you have to much money on your hands for tires and tires are very expensive!
