    Y pipes

Well i'm going to be getting my exhaust done this week and wanted to talk Y pipes. Car is S52 obd1 swap. Going to do 2.25 from the OBD 2 manifolds to Y pipe with single 2.5 back. With cat and muffler.

I was looking at burns stainless Y pipes. But they are very pricey, quoted me $225 for dual 2.25 inlet to 2.5 single outlet. Magnaflow's part #10758 Y pipe is $67.

The burns Y pipe looks a lot smoother. Any thoughts?

I don't think there would be much of a difference.

But it is HIGH quality stainless that is very very smoothly transitioned.

Yeah but if you are running OE s52 headers I don't think its going to be a huge benefit.

I would just go with the magnaflow.

          Get the Magnaflow.

If you were building up a competition engine and your livelyhood depended on that last hundreth of a second then go with the Burns stuff, but for a DD/DE car, it's not worth the extra expense.

I've had both. Unfortunately there is no middle ground in terms of quality. The Burns transition made a noticeable improvement in the exhaust tone over the POS transition Magnaflow stamps out. Why are you going from 2.25" to 2.5"? Aren't the headers secondaries ~2in?

Try the Flowmaster Scavenger series y-pipe.

It is welded together. Some guy on bimmerforums made an manifold back exhaust for an 95 M3 and it looked pretty good.

Come to think of it, it was a flowmaster that went on ///mpressive's S52 car. That'd be my suggestion also.

It was a nice looking piece and it was under $30.

I hear that Burns y-pipe does not introduce an expansion chamber at the merge point like the cheaper y-pipes do. Also, as one can see from a Burn's y pic, it's got a reduction diameter point somewhere after the merge point - this is for improved scavenging, but i don't think this (just like headers) is gonna matter on a stock-ish tune anyway.

if i was to redo my custom downpipe, i'd pony up the dough for the real deal.

I'm going to use an AA track pipe (just the down pipe part) to connect to my OBDII manifolds. I think it's a 3" outlet on that so I can go 3" straight back from there. No idea if it will work well, just bought a new AA track pipe for $150 shipped yesterday!
