hfm 3.5 questions concerns

Thanks again for the offer . I have a code reader and it has no codes stored .I want to rule out the HFM . Worst thing that can happen is I list one of the hfm's on EBAY and loose a few dollars no biggy . I find it hard to beleive a plug could be bad considering the car runs so well . One other thing is if I am at WOT it pings if i back OFF and ease into WOT it seems OK no ping really hard to pin down . Just FYI I own a repair shop in CT so I am no rookie . I was a BMW tech in a dealership for most of the E30 YEARS and a few of the e36 years . -
I would be more than willing to help if you wanna take the trip. Where are you located in CT? Your best bet is to show whats it doing on the dyno before you throw money at anything. if the 3" to 3.5" doesnt show any difference than its probably not your hfm. Check your plugs to make sure one isnt fouled. If you can find someone with a code reader and check to see if its throwing something.Leave a comment:

Like I said earlier, wait for the dyno results before you start throwing money at the problem (i.e. buying a new HFM).
There also has to be a procedure somewhere to troubleshoot an HFM. Don't assume it's bad just because it doesn't look exactly like the 3" and you got it at a good price.Leave a comment:

The tank is fresh and I added 104 booster . it pinged prior to the current tank and with evey thing I have tried nothing has made a bit of difference . I am unsure why going from a 3.5 to a 3.0 with the same software there was no change in the car in performance or in the running . One would think with the software and the injectors I would have noticed something !I am only rueling things out at this point . On the 14th it goes on the dyno . I have a used motor that may have cams installed as well ?? Turner thinks the dyno will tell that with ease .Leave a comment:

Can you verify the gas in the tank is quality?
I think you're getting off track on the HFM thing, since the 3" didn't cure it.
Have you dumped the gas & put in fresh Super from a known retailer? - also the easy cure might be the toluene as previously suggested - at least then you know it's a octane requirement thing, not a flawed sensor.Leave a comment:

The injectors are new from turner . the car idles perfect response is awesome does not miss a beat . Passed emmisions with flying colors . Other than the ping I have not a one complaint . Above is the link to the "generic" HFM I bought notice he is no longer registered .Anyone else buy from him ?Leave a comment:

Possible a few of the injectors are dirty & starving fuel, causing ping?Leave a comment:

Eric maybe you ought to take a short ride out to Bridgewater and borrow Beir's HFM and ECU to see if it's truely the issue or does someone else have the parts you need nearby?Leave a comment:

Yes it's the chip tuned for 3.5hfm 24lbs and it's from turner . I am just ruling things out . I am thinking it's a poor quality hfm I know it's not a bosch unit . There was no change in the car form the 3" to the 3.5" I currently have . I am also going to get a 506 dme and try that with stock chip and stock injectors and the 3" hfm .Leave a comment:

If you're still pinging on a real 3" hfm, wouldn't you figure the HFM is fine?
Are you sure your chip is for a 3.5" HFM? You gave the other stats, but not that.Leave a comment:

I have a turner chip and 24# injectors it's all matched !I just think I have some kind of knockoff hfm .Leave a comment:

if you have a euro hfm and dont have a special chip specifically for it your car will run like crapLeave a comment:

on housing rf 280 218 800
on sensor no # at all .
I pulled the sensor out of a 3" and it clearly reads bosch on the sensor itself unlike the unit I have . I pulled the trigger on a new unit from the dealer the 3.5 euro unit. I will let you know if this corrects the issue of adds any performance . I smell a rat !Last edited by ericzz; 08-06-2007, 08:06 AM.Leave a comment:
