The 506 IS a differnt computer... look inside of both and they are different!!!
when your order your turner ship you have to specifically ask for a 506 chip... its different from the 413 one. I have ordered them both and they each come with a specific label.Leave a comment:

Yes you will get the same chip but the heart of the dme has slight differences in it .there is more going on in the DME other than the chip itself !
Exact quote from turner when I ordered my chip for a 413 ."IT'S NOT THE CORRECT CHIP FOR THE DME BUT IT WILL START YOUR CAR '"Last edited by ericzz; 08-09-2007, 08:56 AM.Leave a comment:

No, it isn't. 506 is a software version, not a DME hardware version. The 413 and the 506 are identical except for the software inside the chip.
I'd bet money if you ask for a chip for the same motor with a 506 and a 413 you'd get the same chip.
The 506 software was developed seperately to run on the same hardware as the older 413 software.
It's like Windows 2000 vs Windows 98. Same basic functionality, they work on the same hardware, but 2000 tends to work better.Leave a comment:

the 506 is a different computer from any 413... turner even has a different chip for each one. The wrong chip will work in that computer but it will run worse. The 506 automatically richens up the mix and was the computer specifically designed for the s50US only by BMW M. Thats all i know about it but there may be other differences tooLeave a comment:

One would have to think that a unit that is the same & size shape plugs in and runs either car would share a part number if they were indentical . I was told that the base tune or mapping in the unit itself not the chip is different . I can not confirm this is true but it made a difference in my car .Leave a comment:

The difference is that his 506 is not failing, I would guess.FWIW I believe I have the same 3.5" HFM off of eBay. I run on 91 octane (CA) and only get knock if I stomp on it at low RPM. I don't think it's your HFM.
My understanding is that the red label 413 and 506 ECUs are exactly the same. Turner told me this over the phone, and the fact that they are both running the same software version seems to confirm this.
If there is evidence of a difference between 413 and 506 ECUs, I think most of the people on this forum would be very curious about it.Leave a comment:

FWIW I believe I have the same 3.5" HFM off of eBay. I run on 91 octane (CA) and only get knock if I stomp on it at low RPM. I don't think it's your HFM.Thanks again for the offer . I have a code reader and it has no codes stored .I want to rule out the HFM . Worst thing that can happen is I list one of the hfm's on EBAY and loose a few dollars no biggy . I find it hard to beleive a plug could be bad considering the car runs so well . One other thing is if I am at WOT it pings if i back OFF and ease into WOT it seems OK no ping really hard to pin down . Just FYI I own a repair shop in CT so I am no rookie . I was a BMW tech in a dealership for most of the E30 YEARS and a few of the e36 years .

Ok boys and girls it seems that the installation of a 506 dme has cured the problem . I was told the hard coded fuel /timing maping from each dme is not the same . I also had a thought I have a bone stock very quiet exhaust and from what I have read most of you have performance mufflers . My point is if you have a 413 DME and similar modes to me give it a listen in the 6k range under load .Leave a comment:
