My E30 S50 exhaust plans and a few questions...

Here's what I'm planning to do, please let me know what you think! Up front will be the black ebay long tube headers. Then, the system will Y in to a single center section and then Y'd to a Ireland Engineering stainless steel catback.

For the center section, I have a couple plans. First off is an electronic exhaust cutout system. This will allow me to run the car straight piped whenever I please. The next plan/question of mine is a center muffler. Is this something I will need along with the IE catback? I've heard the IE system is very quiet so I'm not sure what I'll have to do, maybe just a resonator? I will not be running cats at all. My final question for my single piped center section, should I go with 2.5 inch or 3 inch?

As mentioned, I am planning on running the IE stainless steel catback system for the rear portion of the exhaust. I am picking this up brand new for $240 locally. My question about this system, is the piping any larger than that of the stock M20B25 exhaust system? The more important question, will the IE catback be enough flow for the S50 motor?

    Here's some pictures...

Very close to my s52 plans, It just looks like your a step ahead of me. I got a price from a guy local to me (custom exhaust place) of $400.00 for the electric cutout installed. I have not as of yet tried to price the part down to save some when I gather all the parts for that system. Also, what do you think of header wraping the exhaust manifolds? I haven't heard too much regarding temps from running the headers over the o.e. manifolds. You?

s50 are very noisy engines, so if you plan to use the cutout anyway, make the rest of the system as quiet as possible.
I recommend Y back to two 2" pipes right after the cutout going into the stock e36m3 cats/resonators, then dual pipes to the catback. Single pipe, while lighter, will give you more in cabin resonance (and less clearance) . No reason to go with 3" center section and have the catback designed for 2.5l m20. Go with 2.5" center if need be.

When you open that cut-out it's going to be louder than hell...oh, and you'll also lose massive amounts of low end/mid-range torque.

I have problems with my header-back slipping off my headers (shitty band clamps) and it made my car feel like a pig.

Also, why would you want the "E30" style muffler? 3'' tips FTMFW!:p

They're too old. Even if they aren't worn out, I'd replace them every season if you track and autox them.

mazur what exhaust setup are you running? I like the straight out exit of yours versus the diagonal exit of the stock system.

                I think that's a Magnaflow 14815 muffler.

Just curious how you plan to pass tailpipe tests Matt - is there some 20 year exemption rule? Up here (WA) they take the newest component of your car (motor or chassis) & that's the year of regs you have to meet.

I hear the guys are pretty good at eyeballing hinky stuff too.

Aggressive exhaust, should be cool to see a soundclip of the cutout.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

BTW, A cutout under the car is not a great idea. Atleast get it out from under the car to the side somehow... You risk burning things up under the car.

I just ran a full e36 setup. S50 Mids and UUC catback.

I agree, that cutout needs an exit closer to the side of the car, and you will lose massive torque low and mid with that thing open.

See, I'm the opposite. I think the stock angled tip setup looks awesome!

Well, I have my car registered at my grandparents house about 4 hours North of me. This is also the address my license and insurance show. There is no annual Smog testing there, they only test during transfer of ownership which I have already done.

This is a thought I had aswell. I think I will just put a turn down on it, that should be ok.

What are your thoughts on the piping size for my single center section?

If I were you I would run a 3" center section. And to all those who think that a 24v is loud obv has never heard s14's...

The 24v motors are relatively quiet compared to other motors.

The cutout will prob be pretty dang loud though. When I first finished my swap and was on just headers it was loud as heck lol.
