    e30 clutch/flywheel vs e36 components

did some research but couldn't find a actual answer. so im starting my m50 swap soon and trying to put together parts. i have a oppurtunity to buy a jb racing light weight e36 flywheel for 200 bones. i was going to just machine down my e30 flywheel and use a sachs hd setup. what works better and what would you guys recommend.

yeah thats a damn good deal on the JB piece.

i am going to run a shaved down m20 flywheel, with an HD clutch on my s50 swap. we will see how long it lasts, if it does 20K miles, then i am happy.

Same here. I shaved my flywheel though. It gets the job done. :)

after talking to a few more buddies im leaning towards a shaved e30 flywheel and a sachs hd setup until my horsepower requires more clutch. erick how light is your flywheel now?

+1 on the 6 puck with sachs HD. I love it. The flywheel going on the new motor is shaven as well. Currently its stock.

I started out with a shaved e30 325i flywheel with stock e30 clutch/PP. It weighed in at 16 lbs. Then I had a major PP failure. See:

Now I'm not taking my chances anymore and I'm going with a regular e36 lightweight flywheel and spring hub clutch disc. This PP failure really f'ed things up for me and I only want to remove the transmission again when the clutch wears out. YMMV of course. My PP failure could have been from a faulty e30 PP, or maybe the e30 setup just can't properly handle the power. I was driving the car hard at the track when it happened.

For $200 bucks I think it's a no-brainer to get the real lightweight one. That's cheap. I bought my Fidenza off ebay for about $360 and that was the best I could find.

BTW - The Fidenza weighs in at just under 12lbs.

Anyone want to buy a shaved e30 325i flywheel and nearly brand new clutch and throw-out bearing??

dont think its a power holding issue..hmmm...matt325is runs 400 wheel torque through his e30 clutch and shaved flywheel. hes not nice to it either. unsprung 6 puck. no probs

Is that with a stock pressure plate?

Maybe I was just unlucky and got shit on by the bmw gods..

If you plan to do clutch kicks and hardcore use (judging by your sig :) ), I'd do it right the first time and get a race pressure plate. With the stock pressure plate you're going to run the risk of breaking the straps early on. A race plate with some sort of sport clutch disk (228 or 240) should be more than fine for an M50.

um..im not sure to be honest..maybe thats why his is still together..he must have uprgraded..i know a hd sachs can hancle more than m50 power. we will see with backtrails build. hes shooting for around 400whp with sachs hd pp, clutch net disc and factory shaved flywheel.

my m20 flywheel/clutch took awhile to re-break in, but it seems to hold okay. the s50 clutch is indestructable though and i prefer it to the soft m20 clutch. perhaps an HD setup would have a better feel.
