    eliminate power steering? possible?

    Hey Guys,

I started by searching for this first and only came back with a few hits, but didn't really answer what I was looking for.

I realize anything is possible, it just depends on how much modification you need/want to do.

I dont want my m52 swapped car to have power steering. If I take out the power steering pump, what do I put in its place so the stock belt fits, or is there a shorter belt I should use?

(when searching) I found a part number for a shorter belt but I'm not sure if he was trying to accomplish the same thing I am.

Just checking to see if anyone has done this yet and what you guys might recommend. Thanks.

If you are using stock pullies, then get a belt that is 1410mm long (I believe), it is what I used.

      I think I've used a 1420 and it works.

But yeah, just take out the pump and loop the lines around the rack. I did it for a year and now i'm tired of it. Mine is going back in.

Okay, diving back into my project this weekend....

where can I buy a 1410 or 1420mm belt? I called bmw and they said I would have to know what car it was on, they can't look it up by size.

Is there a bmw that has this length belt or is it something i have to order online? If I have to order it online, where do I buy it from?

        thanks.

maybe not so much power but he loses about 10lbs off the nose of the car when removing the power steering pump. Would help turn in I think.....

I don't think it's even that much weight. I don't know, I guess I just like the feel of unassisted steering.

that's what I'm goin for. Not really trying to gain any power....Want to be able to "feel" the wheels and it's just one less thing to worry about breaking

i eliminated the a/c compressor and bracket too. prob gonna regret this during those random two weeks in the summer when it gets to 105 degrees here in new england. oh well, that's what sunroofs are for

Did you pull the condenser and associated tubing? I did. I think it had to weigh at least 45 - 60 pounds (including bracket and compressor). That definitely makes up for the weight of the motor, and it's out in front of the front axle.
