Stock E36 exhaust will bolt up, but will stick out 1-2" too far.

For a quiet exhaust I would take a factory E36 M3 muffler, cut it open, and remove half of the baffles, then weld it shut.

The e36 downpipes and stock cats will bolt up. It's easy to have any muffler welded on after that.

I just got done putting the midpipes in and they're gonna need work. I have an S52 with OBDII manifolds and OBDI downpipes. They clear the subframe (1/4" spacers under motor mount arms), clear the control arm bushing (THR lollipops) and don't clear the sway bar. They also veer in too far. My tranny sat shifted to the passenger side (noticed when I saw the shifter, and then looked at the tranny mounts, were stretched over). I thought it was the sway bar pushing the engine up and over but I dropped the sway bar and there's little change. Upon closer inspection, the cats are propped up against the driver's side of the heat shield, they're a good couple of inches off center. I'm not sure what the fix will be yet. My RSC36 catback has custom flanges so I need new flanges put on the downpipe anyway, I'll probably get the shop to heat the pipe at the X merger and twist the pipe towards center so it can sit under the heat shield and not torque the engine over.

my swap car (m52) had a identical setup exhaust wise. obd2 manis, obd1 mids, and uuc systemU catback. E30Groupie (s50) is running the same setup also but with ebay headers. neither of us used any spacers. m5 motor mounts, e21 trans mounts. neither of us had any clearance issues either.

is there a diff between obd1 manifolds and obdII? i mean in fitment, not sec.air injection.... i.e. angles and clearance when the downpipes are connected. my control arm mounts are a non issue, it just "looks" like factory downpipes wont clear the subframe or sway bar. i have an obd1(91' 525i motor) by the way so thats where my interests are directed. i cant remember off the top of my head if the cats are connected to the downpipes or not? really appreciate the info guys. got it to fire up on the first try the other day thanks to everyone here. last step is exhuast! STOKED!

Well my friend with an E36 says the cats are centered under the DS so I jumped to conclusions about this setup needing work... I'm thinking what happened is that I lifted the engine on that side to bolt on the pipes and they would have hung down towards the driver's side. It doesn't take a lot of play at the fulcrum (flanges) to offset the cats by a lot on a pipe that long. Maybe that's all it is... I'll dig around this weekend.

found ou the other day that there is a difference in ex. manifolds between the 525i and 325i.(noone told me this). the front manifold is shorter and the downpipe(whatever you chose to usei.e custom or stock) will not clear the subframe or swaybars. you need to get an e36 front manifold for it!
